The Governments of Uganda and Kenya, in collaboration with the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) and the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Programme (NELSAP), have launched the USD137 million (513billion) Angololo Water Resources Development Project. With the preparatory work completed, the next stages involve project structuring, financial mobilization, and construction. The project, expected to be operational in 2030, features a dam with a storage capacity of 31.6M m3, a 1.3 MW mini hydropower plant, an irrigation scheme, and infrastructure for flood control.
The plant also includes fisheries and aquaculture programs to support food security and local enterprises. The project will enhance water supply, irrigation, hydropower generation, and regional cooperation between the two countries, which comes at a critical time as Uganda and the East African Community seek to boost regional development. Furthermore, this is anticipated to boost production in fisheries and agriculture in the Eastern region. This transboundary project aims to benefit over 300,000 people across the Sio-Malaba-Malakisi river basin in both countries. For more on the project,
