Effect of Pesticide use on Crop Production and Food Security in Uganda, 2024

Increasing proliferation of pests has continued to threaten food security in Uganda. In Uganda, crop losses due to pests and diseases are estimated at 10-20% (pre-harvest) with an annual loss in monetary terms amounting to US$ 35-200 million (bananas), US$60-80 million (cassava), US$10 million (cotton), and US$8 million (coffee). This has constrained food access among poor households and the susceptibility to pests and diseases in most of the food insecure regions is a major obstacle to staple food availability, limits food access and leads to food security.

The fourth National Development Plan (NDP IV), identifies philanthropy Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)) as one private financing options that can be leveraged by government over the medium term. According to the Public Investment Financing Strategy (PIFS) 2022, optimizing the benefits associated with CSR in Uganda requires that activities aligned to CSR be streamlined.



Addressing barriers to justice for Gender Based Violence in Uganda

Gender Based Violence (GBV) takes multiple forms, including physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, with harmful traditional practices such as female genital mutilation, early or forced marriages, dowry-related violence, and economic abuse. The 2024 Annual Crime Report revealed that over 75 percent of domestic violence victims were women and girls, with all 1667 recorded rape victims in 2024 being women who also accounted for 98 percent of defilement cases. The Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS) 2022 indicated physical violence against women at 23 percent.


Potential impacts of European Union deforestation regulation on smallholder coffee farmers: Evidence from Indonesia and Uganda

While the EU Regulations aim to promote environmental sustainability, they pose significant challenges for smallholder farmers, including increased compliance costs, risk of reduced market access, and insufficient support systems. The regulations require coffee to be grown on land free from deforestation.


Electricity analysis and forecast to 2027

The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Electricity 2025 brief provides a deep and comprehensive analysis of electricity trends as well as recent policy developments. For the period 2025 through 2027, it forecasts electricity demand, supply and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for various countries and regions worldwide.  For the African continent, the carbon emissions totaled at 481 metric tonnes with a forecast of 509 metric tonnes for 2027.


Increase in new HIV infections among young women

Uganda set a target for zero new HIV infections by 2030. In comparison to the 80’s and 90’s, Uganda has registered notable progress this fight against HIV/AIDS through interventions such as mass education, voluntary counseling and testing, promotion of abstinence, faithfulness and condom use (ABC), prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), among others.


Government launches smart meter plant in Kawempe

In July 2025, a smart meter power plant worth Ushs 54 billion was inaugurated in Kawempe, Kampala, by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development. The plant features full-scale production lines, quality control systems, and laboratory testing facilities with the capability to meet international meter manufacturing standards. When the plant is fully operational, it will have capacity to produce 600-700K single phase meters and 300-350K three-phase meters annually.


Government Commissions Cassava Processing Factory in Nakasongola

Pura Organic Agro Tech Limited, a cassava processing factory in Nakasongola District was launched by H.E the President. The facility employs about 130 people and is expected to provide a stable market for cassava farmers in central Uganda. Over 1800 outgrower local farmers are embracing cassava production as these agro-processors invest in farmer training to increase yields, and value addition. Yields are expected to improve yields from 2 to 6 tons per acre.


Uganda, Kenya Launch Shs500Bn Angololo Water Project to Boost Food Security

The Governments of Uganda and Kenya, in collaboration with the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) and the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Programme (NELSAP), have launched the USD137 million (513billion) Angololo Water Resources Development Project. With the preparatory work completed, the next stages involve project structuring, financial mobilization, and construction.
