The report highlights a big gap in achieving goals set for 2030, with only 6 years remaining. The report reveals that only 17% of the SDG targets are on track, over 33% lagging behind and the rest at minimal progress. To achieve the goals, massive investment is needed alongside scaled up action globally, for a more resilient and prosperous world. On a brighter note, some positive highlights include reduction in child mortality, prevention of HIV infection, and access to energy and broadband. The areas that ought to be prioritized for 2025 onwards include; financing development, peace and security, and a much-needed push to reform the Global Finance Architecture fit for purpose for both developed and developing countries.
However, the effects of COVID-19 still linger amidst increasing geopolitical tensions and climate change hence greatly stalling progress worldwide. Further, 23 million people joined the bracket of living in extreme poverty while 100 million more people were suffering with hunger in 2022 as compared to 2019. Global temperatures continue to rise as they near the dreaded 1.5˚C heating threshold.
