The E-Mobility Outlook Report 2024 provides a comprehensive assessment of Uganda’s progress in implementing the National E-Mobility Strategy, outlining the opportunities, challenges, and strategic interventions necessary to accelerate this transition. The transition to electric mobility represents a pivotal shift in Uganda’s transportation sector.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), EV sales accounted for 14%
of global vehicle sales in 2023, with projections indicating that by 2040, over 60% of new car sales will be electric.
Uganda was a pioneer in E-Mobility on the African continent, taking a unique approach that prioritizes local manufacturing alongside EV adoption – starting with the production of the Kiira EV back as far back as 2009. Government of Uganda and the Private Sector have invested in domestic production, with local companies leading the development of electric buses, electric motorcycles, electric bicycles and battery pack technology. The transport sector is a key enabler of economic development facilitating all key sectors under the 10-fold growth strategy- Agriculture, Manufacturing, Tourism and, STI. The use of electric automobiles presents a big opportunity through the reduction in transportation costs, which is a big operational cost in several economic value chains.
