The State of African Energy Outlook 2025 provides an overview of the African energy sector 2024 and highlights trends in oil, gas and renewables.
The report revealed that:
- The Oil market was expected to see a gradual increase in the medium term although disruptions in major OPEC member nations posing risks to output. However, Africa’s contribution would remain at around 6.77 million barrels per day. Brent crude prices are projected to remain above USD80 per barrel in the short term.
- Africa continues to struggle with electricity access, especially in rural areas. Over 600 million people lack access to electricity, with majority living in sub–Saharan Africa. Solar and onshore wind energy are expected to dominate renewable energy development.
- The share of renewables in Africa's power generation mix is expected to jump from 27% in 2024 to 43% by 2030, explaining the shift in investment preferences towards green projects.
- Whereas Africa maintains its role in global energy markets, challenges in production, investment and transition towards renewables persist.
