Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development launched Uganda’s first National Green Taxonomy (NGT) in September 2025. A standardized framework aimed to define and classify economic activities that meaningfully support environmental sustainability and climate goals.
It sets clear criteria for what counts as “green,” helping government, investors and financial institutions identify projects that contribute to climate change mitigation, adaptation, biodiversity protection, pollution prevention, and circular economic objectives. The taxonomy covers key sectors in Uganda’s economy and is designed to align investment flows with the nation’s climate commitments including Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The framework supports national development plans and ensures that climate finance contributes to equitable and sustainable development across Uganda by emphasizing inclusivity through encouraging finance that benefits women, youth, persons with disabilities, and marginalized groups.
