Industrialization is fundamental to Africa’s development. According to the Africa Industrialization Index 2022 report, Africa’s rapid growing internal markets and large labour force are an impetus for industrial development. However, industrial development has grown at a slow pace. The Africa Industrialization Index (AII) is a flagship initiative by the African Development Bank (AfDB) aimed at strengthening data on Africa’s industrial development.
Uganda has been classified among the top performers having improved by 5 places from 25th position in 2010 to 20th position in 2021 with scores of 0.4988 and 0.5418 respectively. This performance was analyzed across three parameters: performance of the manufacturing sector, the direct determinants of manufacturing (capital and labour), and the indirect determinants. The report further provides a synopsis of Africa’s progress on industrialization, highlights key trends, opportunities, constraints and recommendations for accelerating industrial development for better results across the countries.
