Bank of Uganda to Start Buying Gold Domestically

In a bid to support its foreign reserves and addressing associated risks in the international financial markets, Central Bank of Uganda will start purchasing locally-produced gold.  

To complement existing measures to accumulate international reserves, imports of raw gold are expected to reduce, contributing to the reduction in total imports, in turn leading to decrease in booth trade deficit and current account deficit.


Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Framework for Uganda’s Banking Industry

Bank of Uganda launched the ESG framework for Uganda’s Banking sector to guide financial institutions in adopting sustainability practices thereby supporting Uganda’s broader Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The ESG Framework is a set of guidelines and principles that will support the Uganda’s Bankers’ Association member financial institutions in achieving their sustainability goals, assisting their clients in transitioning towards low-carbon and resource-efficient economies while also supporting financial inclusivity and social welfare.


Uganda Tourism Board and Emirates Sign MOU to Promote Uganda’s Tourism

During the Arabian Travel Market, Uganda through Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with United Arab Emirates (UAE) government owned airline, Emirates.

For over two decades, Uganda has been a key destination for Emirates’ global network.

The partnership is expected to support Uganda’s tourism objectives by identifying opportunities to promote joint marketing in key destinations on the airline’s vast global network of more than 130 passenger destinations. 


Uganda Signs MOU to Construct Kidepo International Airport

Uganda through Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT), Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MTWA) and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry to construct third international airport in Uganda.

The Chamber will construct an airport next to Kidepo National Park and tourism hotels within the park to boost the tourism sector.

Implications of early marriages on development outcomes in Uganda

This policy note explores the trends and effects of early marriage in Uganda, with a focus on the effects of early marriage on fertility rates and girls’ education. According to the Report, it is estimated that the country will spend over Ushs 645 billion per annum on the healthcare of teenage mothers and the education of their children if nothing is done to remedy the situation.


How to halt the declining labour force participation rates among female Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Uganda

This policy note examines the challenges PWDs face in the Ugandan labour market, emphasizing the disparities and obstacles faced by disabled women. These disparities manifest in the form of gender-based pay disparities, limited representation in the formal sector, inadequate workplace modifications to account for people with disabilities working there as well as the low levels of schooling among school-going PWDs. The brief makes key observations in line with the employment status of PWDs.

The Climate Finance Landscape: Barriers and Opportunities to Uganda’s Access and Utilisation of Climate Finance

Uganda is facing increasingly irregular climate changes comprising of heavier and more erratic rainfall causing flooding, high temperatures causing severe and longer-lasting droughts.

Several actions have been undertaken by Government to combat the escalating climate changes including development of the National Climate Change Policy and its implementation strategy. Government commits 30% of national resources and 70% expected from internal sources to respond to climate change by 2030.
