Empowering Women Through Public Procurement and Enabling Inclusive Growth

This policy brief summarizes the key challenges that women-owned and women-led businesses face when competing for public procurement opportunities. Public procurement has the potential to create equal outcomes for women and men through supporting decent employment and responsible business practices. The brief recommends the need to increase access for women-owned businesses as well as gender-responsive enterprises to facilitate the inclusion of disadvantaged and underrepresented suppliers. Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot 2022

This Report presents the latest evidence on gender equality across all 17 Goals, calling out the long road ahead to achieve gender equality. It emphasizes the interlinkages among the goals, the pivotal force gender equality plays in driving progress across the SDGs, and women and girls’ central role in leading the way forward. According to the Report, violence against women remains high; global health, climate, and humanitarian crises have further increased risks of violence, especially for the most vulnerable women and girls; and women feel more unsafe than they did before the pandemic.


The 2021/2022 Human Development Report

This Report is the latest publication in the series of global Human Development Reports produced by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) since 1990. The Report provides insights on analytically and empirically grounded discussions on major development issues, trends and policies. The 2022 Human Development Report indicates that Uganda’s Human Development Index stands at 0.525 as at 2021, a decline from 0.544 in 2019.


The Agriculture Value Chain Development (AVCD) Strategy approved

The AVCD Strategy is aligned to the NDP III and PDM Framework. It spells out WHAT needs to be done at the various levels of the agricultural value chain, the HOW to do it. It also specifies the roles of the different program actors (WHO). The AVC is tandem with the objectives of the Agro-Industrialization Programme under Uganda’s third NDP III programme such as increasing the agricultural sector growth rate from 3.8 in FY2020/21 percent to 6.0 percent FY 2020/21.


Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Wild places Africa and Tiang Tian Group sign concessional agreements

In a bid to develop Uganda’s Tourism and the Hospitality sector, UWA  signed concession Agreements on the 7th April, 2022 with two private sector players; Wild places Africa and Tiang Tian Group to develop high - end tourist accommodation facilities to cater for a certain level of guests at Murchison falls National Park and Kyambura Wildlife Reserve in Queen Elizabeth National park protected areas respectively.


Uganda’s Coffee exports for 12 months ending April 2022 increased by 10 percent in quantity and 51 percent in value

  • The increase is attributed to the coffee road map and its detailed, plan to increase its current production of 402,000 tons of coffee to 1.2 million tons annually by 2025. The National Coffee Act, 2021 is also expected to enhance production and productivity by increasing total export value of processed agricultural commodities such as coffee, tea, fish, dairy, meat, and maize (and its products).

Livestock Associations and Cooperatives: Implications for Livestock Sector Transformation

Involvement of various MDAs is critical in the Development of Uganda’s livestock sector is pertinent in attaining objectives of the third National Development Plan through the Agro-Industrilization Programme. These MDAs play critical roles such as (i) regulating the activities of members, (ii) promoting production, processing, marketing and consumption of livestock products and (iii) offering financial and advisory services to members, among others.


The Impacts of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict on Food Prices, Food and Nutrition Security in Africa

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has worsened the food security crisis in many African countries. Many countries in East, West, Middle, and Southern Africa rely on Russia and Ukraine for a significant percentage of their wheat, fertilizer, or vegetable oils imports, but the war disrupts global commodity markets and trade flows to Africa, increasing already high food prices in the region. Even countries that import little from the two countries are indirectly impacted by higher world prices for key commodities.


Promoting Inclusive Policy Responses to Improve Food and Nutrition Security Post-COVID Pandemic in Africa

The COVID-19 pandemic is a health and human crisis threatening the food security and nutrition of millions of people around the world. Hundreds of millions of people were already suffering from hunger and malnutrition before the virus hit and, unless immediate action is taken, we could see a global food emergency. In the longer term, the combined effects of COVID-19 itself, as well as corresponding mitigation measures and the emerging global recession could, without large-scale coordinated action, disrupt the functioning of food systems.
