The East African Community (EAC) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on 17th April 2023 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania between the EAC Secretary General and the UNHCR Regional Director for the East, Horn, and Great Lakes Regions, and targeted renewing and strengthening cooperation in addressing issues on refugee and asylum seekers in need of international protection, across the region.

There will be prioritization in addressing the mixed movements of refugees and migrants in the region, binding international and national refugee law, and protecting persons with special needs as a result of this collaboration.
